Maupiti

OUR STORY

The Maupiti story

In 1722 Maupiti island, located to the west of Bora Bora in French Polynesia, was discovered by dutchman Jacob Roggeveen. Today, a boat is still the only way to get to Maupiti.

Maupiti island is regarded as the ‘best kept secret’ in French Polynesia. The central island of Maupiti has a high peak of 380 metres and a surface area of 11 square kilometers. The lagoon has large and flat coral islands in its northern reef half and two motus (small islands) on both sides of the pass at its southern end. Today’s population is app. 1,200 people.

At the start of the 21st century a young fashion designer visited Maupiti island and immediately fell in love with the island and it’s inhabitants. He was impressed with the way the Maupitians dressed themselves, colourful and light but still resistant to the sometimes wild weather of the pacific. He adapted this concept at first in a Maupiti footwear collection with a distinctive flavor of nautical and outdoor with an authentic look and feel. The small collection was successful and was succeeded by two new collections per year.

In 2017 a new and ambitious design team took control over the Maupiti brand and they were determined to further develop the brand. Very important was to not stray from the original concept. This concept was converted into the new summer and winter collection. Light and colourfull summerwear succeeded by a robust and warm winter-collection. Just as the Maupitians are now doing for thousands of years but then in the european context and weather conditions.

For the future the Maupiti brand will further develop itself into a summer and winter brand. Always with a strong bond with the beautiful island in the Geat Pacific Ocean.
